Our Grade 4s are inquiring into why humans migrate, what the effects of human migration are, and how migration is the same or different than it was in the past in the context of stories of real-life immigrants.

I had such fun sharing in their learning journey as we investigated the power of stories and storytelling.

We had some fun telling "stories" by means of a basic drum circle activity. The students “drummed” on their desks as we were unable to l use the school djembes due to COVID regulations.

We started with collective greetings - played individually, in rounds and in groups.

We used our “drums” to share a collective “story” where different sounds were added to create specific sound effects.

The students reflected on the collective "story" we told through the music and how that connected us and made us feel. The idea was to create a sense of community and belonging. The students also had to work collaboratively to create a story through music.

This led us to discuss the different ways in which humans can tell stories, why stories are important and how stories inform and empower us.

The students went on to find members of their community who had a migration story to share.
